PAST, PRESENT AND FUTURE OF PIPELINE WELDING
When: Wednesday, September 20, 2023; 6:00 PM – 9:00 PM
Where:ÌýGusto's Restaurant and Lounge, 28-7003 30 St SE, Calgary, AB
With more and more scrutiny on pipelines today, it’s important to discuss solutions that will help improve the quality and productivity of pipeline fabrication in Canada. We have some of the best pipeline welders in the world, but we still have room for improvement in our practices and consumable selections. Let’s discuss the past, present and future of pipeline welding consumables as well as factors that affect the quality of welds, such as preheat, inter-pass temperature, hydrogen control and more
Tyler is the Western Canada Technical Sales Manager for voestalpine Bohler Welding since 2018. He studied welding engineering technology at Northern College in Kirkland Lake, Ontario. He is a red seal journeyman welder, international welding technologist, certified engineering technologist as well as a former ABSA welding examiner and CWB Level 2 visual inspector.Ìý

Student Paper Night
Paper declarations must be received by February 27, 2023.
Final papers must be received by March 13, 2023.
OBJECTIVE:
The objective is to have at least two SAIT students (or groups) prepare a technical paper and present their findings to a panel of judges. The paper can be on any topic of their choosing related to their field of study: materials, welding, joining, inspection, etc. The paper must be original work completed by the submitting group. This work should include data and findings produced by the group themselves: it is not intended to come entirely from internet sources. Students are encouraged to carry over work from their in-class projects as long as the work is authentic and completed only by the group members. Groups may comprise of one or two people.
PROCESS:
The presentations and papers will be judged by a panel of three to five judges selected from the CWBA Calgary Chapter executive committee. The award recipients will be declared at the end of the Student Paper Night on March 22, 2023 at SAIT (CA415). The CWBA Calgary Chapter, in combination with the CWB Welding Foundation, will award $1,000 for the 1st place paper and $500 for the 2nd place paper.

Pipeline Weld Strength Overmatching in Practice
When: Wednesday, October 20, 2021, 6:00 PM – 9:00 PM MDT
Where: Gusto's Restaurant and Lounge, 28-7003 30 St SE, Calgary, AB
Material manufacturing techniques have evolved all around the world and the materials often have a wider range of properties and as-welded results. The notion that the weld is always stronger than the parts being joined needs to be evaluated with more scrutiny creating the need for the design, construction, and pipeline maintenance to be adjusted.
Speakers: Nick Khotenko and Kelsey Coulter work for ATCO in the Natural Gas Division and the Weld Quality Assurance team, respectively. Nick is the current Vice-Chair of Construction for Pipeline Research Council International (PRCI) - Design, Material and Construction Committee. Kelsey is the Vice-Chair of the CEPA Foundation Welding Best Practices Committee.
