SAIT WET Student Paper Competition

SAIT Polytechnic, Aldred Center, Room CA415, 1301 16 Ave NW, Calgary, AB


OBJECTIVE: The objective is to have at least 2 groups of SAIT WET students prepare a technical paper and present their findings for a panel of judges. The paper can be on any topic of their choosing, 
related to their field of study: materials, welding, joining, inspection, etc. The paper must be original work completed by the submitting group. This work should include data or information procured by the group themselves and is not intended to come entirely from internet findings. Students are encouraged to carry over work from their in class projects as long as the work is authentic and completed only by the group members. Group size can be individuals to a maximum of two people.


DISCUSSION:
The presentations and papers will be judged by a panel of 3 to 5 judges selected from the CWBA organizing committee. The winning group and second place group will be declared at the end of the
 presentations.

CWB Association and CWB Foundation will award $1000 to the best and $500 to the second place recipients.

This will include a Q&A period for an industry panel designed to allow students to see a line of sight fur future careers in the welding industry and allow them an opportunity to ask questions to industry representatives.

CWBA Dinner Meeting - Get to Know Pre-heating and Use it to your Advantage!

Presentation content: Preheating is an important preparatory operation for certain welding jobs. Essentially, three methods commonly are used to preheat joints: propane (gas) torch, induction heating, and electrical resistance heating. This presentation will discuss the differences between these three methods, their advantages and disadvantages and describe the benefits of using electrical preheating methods for specific applications.

This presentation will provide an overview of the scope and anticipated implementation timeline for the certification method. Natural Resources Canada, the National Non-Destructive Testing Íâ¹úÃÀŮɫÇéƬ Body is preparing to launch a new certification method: visual testing. This presentation will provide an overview of the scope and anticipated implementation timeline forthe certification method. The role of this certification will also be compared to existing certifications that have been considered visual certifications in the past.

New Material/Processes in Welding

This presentation will discuss some of the welding innovations not in just oil and gas, but including automotive, aviation, and other applications. It is exciting times where the applications of different types of materials are mandating new processes throughout industry. With these new materials, new welding processes are being developed to handle the demands. Also, this is a precursor for Welding Engineering Technologist students to look outside the box (Oil/Gas) when it comes time after graduation.
