The Non-Destructive Evaluation, Failure Prediction and Burst Testing of a Service Damaged Pressure Vessel, which contained Weld Defects
Thursday, March 9th, 2017 6:00 PM to 9:00 PM
Clocktower Brew Pub Glebe - 575 Bank St, Ottawa
Speaker: Mick Pates, IWE. PPC and Associates
Mick’s education includes an MSc. in Welding Technology and he is also a Certified International Welding Engineer. He has been involved in joining, NDE and failure analysis in the nuclear, structural, aerospace, mining, electronics, defence, marine and offshore industries on a global basis. He is currently President of PPC and PPC and Associates, both Welding Engineering/Technology and Inspection Consultancies and is retained by MaJIC, the Materials and Joining Innovation Centre.
Summary: A pressure vessel, which had been withdrawn from service due to cracking in the weld zone, was subject to several types of Non Destructive Evaluation (NDE) to characterize and measure the weld flaws. These techniques included magnetic particle and ultrasonic testing in both the manual and mechanized modes. Using the flaw sizes given by the NDE analysis, and the material toughness values taken from the vessel and weld zones, an Engineering Critical Assessment was carried out in order to predict the failure location.
