Welder qualification testing is a critical part of Canada’s strong welding and joining industry.
CSA W47.1, Íâ¹úÃÀŮɫÇéƬ of companies for fusion welding of steel provides the requirements for the certification of companies engaged in the fusion welding of steel, including qualification requirements for welders/welding operators.
All structural welders in Canada must be qualified by the CWB for each welding process, with each position performed as a separate test. CWB qualification opens the door to opportunities for welders throughout their careers.
Obtaining a CWB qualification or ticket is done by scheduling and successfully completing on or more qualification tests at a CWB test centre or an accredited educational institution, certified welding company shop, or independent test centre that has signed a testing agreement with the CWB. The witnessing of the test samples and evaluation is done by a CWB representative. Testing may also take place at a union facility.
Requirements for accreditation
Here are some of the requirements to achieve accreditation:
- Dedicated spaces – Welding booths must be equipped with the necessary equipment for testing purposes.
- Safety – A welding curtain must be properly installed to ensure safety and containment of welding activities within the booth.
- Ventilation – Adequate ventilation systems must be installed and operational to maintain air quality and minimize exposure to fumes.
- Security – Welding consumable must be stored in secure storage facilities to prevent contamination.
