Derek struck his first arc at the age of twelve and never looked back. He completed the welding program throughout high school, then worked as a welder fitter in his father’s company. He completed his apprenticeship through Southern Alberta Institute of Technology in 1987 and entered the pressure industry in 1995 fabricating pressure piping equipment. In 2000 Derek went back to school for Visual Welding Inspection and non-destructive testing, currently holding a level III visual inspection certification through the Íâ¹úÃÀŮɫÇéƬ, and welding examiner’s certification endorsed through the Alberta Boilers Safety Association.

Derek has over forty years of fabrication experience in various types of equipment builds, including fracturing, oil sands, oil field and drilling, aggregate, natural gas, compression, fire suppression, and other areas of processing equipment. He also has experience in purchasing, logistics control, metallurgy, inspection, examination and testing throughout Canada, Europe, the Middle East and Asia.

Teaching for the Canadian Welding Bureau has created an amazing opportunity to share in the culmination of knowledge and educational experience achieved throughout my career.

Teaching future generations of trades people is both an honor and privilege and is deserving of an approach with a passionate heart, driving positive energy in an articulative nature for the creation of a synergistic outcome for both, the students and the teacher.
